The Post Wellingtonian of the Year Awards (The Wellys) honours those who have made significant contributions to the Wellington region. Asian Events Trust was thrilled to see Ray Thomas awarded the recipient of the Jemima Gazley Spirit of Wellington Award at this years’ event held on 27 March 2024.

With Wellington hosting the Lunar New Year Festival to commemorate the Year of the Dragon, the Asian Events Trust caught up with local Wellington politicians and community members to see what they have planned to celebrate the New Year, and their hopes for Wellington in 2024.

The waterfront around TSB Arena and Shed 6 will come alive today with vibrant cultural performances, contemporary artworks, and traditional foods, as the community celebrates the Year of the Dragon.

After welcoming in the Year of the Dragon last weekend, Wellington is gearing up for a huge celebration, with fireworks on Saturday and a community event at TSB Arena and Shed 6 on Sunday, with activities for all ages.

This Saturday 10 February welcomes in the Lunar New Year, a two-week long festival celebrated in Asian cultures. Wellington will be celebrating the festival with a range of community events organised by the Asian Events Trust, starting this weekend with dragon and lion dances across the region as far as Foxton.

Dance, music, and theatre will come together this weekend for a Wellington-first world premiere, as Te Tumu Toi New Zealand Arts Foundation Laureate Daniel Belton and Good Company Arts unleash their latest work, DRAGON.

Lunar New Year celebrations will get off to a fiery start with a fireworks display on Wellington’s waterfront on Saturday 17 February 2024. The fireworks, supported by Stonewood Group will kick off Asian Events Trust’s (AET) Lunar New Year Festival.

Asian Events Trust (AET) has announced the heralding of a new beginning with a rebrand of Wellington’s much-loved Chinese New Year Festival to the Lunar New Year Festival in 2022.

A weekend of activities to mark 20 years of Wellington’s Chinese New Year celebrations in the capital will go off with a bang on Saturday 13 February. The capital city’s night will light up with a fireworks display to farewell the Year of the Rat welcome in the Year of the Ox, supported by Stonewood Capital.

Organisers of Wellington’s Chinese New Year Festival have added an exciting new component to the 2021 festival. The Chinese New Year Zodiac Art Trail is an installation of specially commissioned artworks by locally and internationally based artists around Wellington’s CBD. We chatted with four of the exhibiting artists.

Supported by Asia New Zealand and Wellington City Council, the Chinese New Year Zodiac Art Trail will feature 12 artworks across discoverable sites in Wellington’s CBD and waterfront. Activations by local performing artists will also be developed at selected sites to further increase the exposure and the profile of contemporary Aotearoan and Asian art.

Wellington Chinese New Year organisers, Asian Events Trust (AET), have been selected as one of 10 semi-finalists in the 2020 Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Awards. AET are up for the Mitre 10 Community of the Year award for its work in the organisation of the annual Chinese New Year Festival.
