A family fun-filled free event that reflects all the traditional aspects of a Chinese New Year celebration. Festival Day is of course themed Asian, showcasing something for everyone: delicious cooked foods, crafts, information and display stands, groceries, a street parade, cultural entertainment, balloons, face-painting and photo booths. If you want more, East Meets West is our Saturday early evening gold-coin donation show for all the family, melding Eastern and Western performers and showcasing performers from Heilongjiang, China especially brought over for this Festival. And to finish up, a dazzling night-sky fireworks display lights up the sky. Come join us and enjoy something Asian at the Chinese New Year Festival - Year of the Dog!

Asian Market - Food

10.30am to 5pm, Michael Fowler Centre

Ah, the taste-sensations and smells of delicious Asian foods! Come and see what's on offer; foods of Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnamese, Chinese ... all waiting for you to enjoy. Community groups and local restaurants and cafes have joined forces to bring all these delicious foods for you to sample, for lunch, a snack or just from intrigue - it's all worth the walk and wait! The Market wouldn't be complete without an opportunity to meander and purchase from the must-haves of craft, merchandise and information stalls. We also welcome you to purchase foods and drink to enjoy inside the stage auditorium whilst watching the Cultural Entertainment.


Asian Market - Craft & Information 

10.30am - 4pm, Michael Fowler Centre

Discover the new and always interesting; crafts, calligraphy, culture and community. Try your 'bulls-eye' luck at our Platinum sponsor's stall, ANZ for a free give-away or a chat about your financial opportunities or get a take-away-memory from one of two ANZ photo booths; there's traditional tea-tasting at the Wellington Xiamen Association stall; China Cultural Centre NZ showcases Chinese arts and craftspeople from Heilongjiang, a northeastern region of China, community groups offer a selection of goods; there's so much to see and do with crafts and goods for sale, and things to learn, all Asian-focused for you to enjoy.


Family Fun Fair

11am - 4pm, Civic Square

This is our kids-friendly family fun fair, featuring FREE fun inflatables and merry-go-round, tattoos (temporary!) and face-painting. To keep everyone entertained and fed, a giant LED screen will play back live-footage of performances from the Michael Fowler Centre's main stage Cultural Entertainment whilst you can buy delicious foods from Food Trucks stationed nearby - bring a rug and relax on the artificial turf as you enjoy the outdoors and inside show.


Cultural Entertainment

11am to 4.30pm, Michael Fowler Centre

Entertainment from local performers, plus a preview from our invited international performers, guests from Heilongjiang, Northern China brought especially to showcase their skills and WOW-factor, at Wellington's Chinese New Year Festival. Come and see this an amazing international performance group at one-only ticketed show, East Meets West - entry by gold coin donation.


Street Parade

2pm to 3pm, Starts from Courtenay Place and finishes at Frank Kitts Park

Communities share their spirit of what Chinese New Year means to them by parading through the main streets of Wellington – a fabulous display of colour and celebration. The Year of the Dog Parade features lion dancers, dragon troupes twisting through the central city route, plus international colour and performers.


East Meets West Show

7pm - 9pm, Michael Fowler Centre

East Meets West is our Saturday early evening gold-coin-entry show for all the family, melding Eastern and Western performers and showcasing performers from Heilongjiang, China especially brought over for this Festival.  

This will be a spectacular visual showcase focusing on the universal language of performing arts, local and international artists share the stage to draw strength from cultural exchange and collaboration and providing an enriching experience for audiences that build understanding and appreciation of the eastern and western cultures.


Festival Fireworks

9.30pm, Frank Kitts Park, Wellington Waterfront

An explosion of sound and colour to welcome in the Year of the Dog. Join us in celebrating the most important festival in the Chinese calendar – Chinese New Year – as Wellington's sky bursts into a dazzling visual spectacle. The Festival is excited to bring this event to Wellington in association with Stonewood Homes.
