Chinese New Year organisers to be recognised as Absolutely Positive Wellingtonians
The Asian Events Trust team of Linda Lim, Stephannie Tims and Rita Tom, who have organised the Chinese New Year celebrations in the Capital since its inception, will be recognised as Absolutely Positive Wellingtonians this week.
The trio will receive an Absolutely Positive Wellingtonian Award from Mayor Celia Wade-Brown at the full Council meeting this Wednesday 26 February at Wellington City Council’s Committee Room 1.
Absolutely Positive Wellingtonian Awards honour members of the community who have made outstanding contributions to the Capital.
Twelve years ago Linda, Stephanie and Rita decided to celebrate Chinese New Year with Wellington, organising Wellington’s first public celebration of one of the world’s biggest festivals.
Their event has grown to be one of the most popular in the Capital, expanding to a full programme of events and entertainment including a day at the races, with special Year of the Horse related activities for the kids, the New Clothes for a New Year fashion show and the Festival Day which includes an Asian market, street parade and cultural entertainment.
After 12 years of organising Chinese New Year events the trio are still going strong and this year’s festivities have been the biggest and most successful ever.
The presentation of the Absolutely Positive Wellingtonian Awards will take place at the beginning of the full Council meeting, due to begin at 5.30pm, Wednesday 26 February at Council’s Committee Room 1,101 Wakefield Street.
Photographs will be available for media, as well as copies of the citation which will be read for Linda, Stephanie and Rita.
