Sunday 2 February, Michael Fowler Centre, Wellington
The ‘flagship’ of Wellington’s Chinese New Year Festival is Festival Day, with a programme that reflects all the traditional aspects of a Chinese New Year celebration, and is showcased as the finale of this Wellington event by the following three events:
10.30am to 4.30pm, Michael Fowler Centre
Ah, the taste-sensations and smells of delicious Asian foods! Come and see what's on offer; foods of Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnamese and Chinese, all waiting for you to enjoy. The Market wouldn't be complete without an opportunity to meander and purchase from the must-haves of craft, merchandise and information stalls.
The stage programme is located in the beautiful auditorium of the Michael Fowler Centre, and accessed through the Asian Market. Buy your favourite or taste-challenging foods, and relax in the auditorium where a packed programme will entertain you. Grab a free programme on the day and settle in for a wonderful show!
We welcome our sponsor ANZ and you can pop down to their stall to get advice on money matters, for here and overseas, or attend one of their four free seminars located behind their stall. Plus win prizes for the kids, use an ANZ EFTpos or simply grab a balloon for the little ones.
Capital E will be setting up in the Renouf Foyer Promenade for the day, providing fabulous creative activities for children, including face painting Chinese lantern making, zodiac animal crafts, and more
Visit the New Zealand Post stall; they’ve released four special stamps to celebrate 2014′s Year of the Horse. This issue reflects different aspects of Chinese tradition and culture and celebrates New Zealand’s growing Chinese community, and very fitting that they combine aspects of Chinese culture with Kiwi themes and images of horses.
MFC Carnival Carpark
10.30 to 4pm, Michael Fowler Centre Carpark
It's all action at the Carnival Carpark! We're celebrating the Year of the Horse, so they'll be petting ponies, a kids merry-go-ground, an obstacle course inflatable and kids activity crafts. Mum and dad can relax on a hay bale and watch on whilst the kids are playing up - it's all good fun!
Come early or later for these activities but join the Street Parade in-between which features horses and colourful floats, lots of loud drumming and lions and dragons.
2pm to 3pm, Starts from Tennyson Street and finishes at the Michael Fowler Centre.
Communities share their spirit of what Chinese New Year means to them by parading through the main streets of Wellington – a fabulous display of colour and celebration. The Year of the Horse features lion dancers, dragon troupes twisting through the central city route, plus traditional costumes of past dynasties.
11am to 4.00pm, Michael Fowler Centre
The Cultural Entertainment program is staged in the beautiful auditorium of the Michael Fowler Centre, and accessed through the Asian Market. The programme is packed full for the day and features community groups of amazing variety - check out the programme below.
