The ‘flagship’ of Wellington’s Chinese New Year Festival is Festival Day, with a programme that reflects all the traditional aspects of a Chinese New Year celebration, and is showcased as the finale of this Wellington event by the following events:

Asian Market - Food

10.30am to 5pm, Shed 6

Ah, the taste-sensations and smells of delicious Asian foods! Come and see what's on offer; foods of Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnamese and Chinese, all waiting for you to enjoy. Community groups and local restaurants and cafes have joined forces to bring all these delicious foods for you to sample, for lunch, a snack or just from intrigue - it's all worth the walk and wait!  The Market wouldn't be complete without an opportunity to meander and purchase from the must-haves of craft, merchandise and information stalls.

Asian Market - Craft & Information 

10.30am - 4pm, TSB Bank Arena

Discover the new and interesting; crafts, calligraphy and culture.

Fun Under the Sails

11am - 3pm, Queens Wharf

This is our kids-friendly space and activities are still being confirmed - watch this space! 

Street Parade

2pm to 3pm, Starts from Courtenay Place and finishes at the Frank Kitts Park

Communities share their spirit of what Chinese New Year means to them by parading through the main streets of Wellington – a fabulous display of colour and celebration. The Year of the Monkey Parade features pretend monkeys on wheels, lion dancers, dragon troupes twisting through the central city route, plus traditional costumes of past dynasties.

Cultural Entertainment

11am to 4pm, TSB Bank Arena

Entertainment from local performers, plus a preview from our invited international performers, guests from China brought especially to showcase their skills and WOW-factor, only at Wellington's Chinese New Year Festival. Plus two ticketed shows are planned.
