The ‘flagship’ of Wellington’s Chinese New Year Festival is Festival Day, with a programme that reflects all the traditional aspects of a Chinese New Year celebration, and is showcased as the finale of this Wellington event by the following three events:

Asian Market - Food

10.30am to 6.30pm, Shed 6

Ah, the taste-sensations and smells of delicious Asian foods! Come and see what's on offer; foods of Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnamese and Chinese, all waiting for you to enjoy. Community groups and local restaurants and cafes have joined forces to bring all these delicious foods for you to sample, for lunch, a snack or just from intrigue - it's all worth the walk and wait!  The Market wouldn't be complete without an opportunity to meander and purchase from the must-haves of craft, merchandise and information stalls.

Asian Market - Craft & Information

10.30am - 4.30pm, TSB Bank Arena

Discover the new and interesting; crafts, calligraphy and culture.

ANZ, our Platinum Sponsor, are focused on opportunity, come and try your luck on their winning stall and why you're there, talk to the team that can help towards your goals. Capital E is joining us from their fantastic new premises just a few steps from the Asian Market, with kids activities, interactive screens and building paraphernalia. The Wellington Chinese Garden is taking shape, come and see the progress and support the magnificent concept for Wellington's community. It's the Year of the Sheep so we've welcomed Crafts sheep-like; merino, soaps, wools and more. Stay supple and healthy by visiting our two well-being specialists; chiropractors and acupuncturists. And take in the Chinese New Year Exhibition, a collaboration of artist Stan Chan and the Confucius Institute taking it to the schools. These are just some of the stall selection, don't miss out on all the fun.

Waterfront Carnival

11am - 4pm, Frank Kitts Park

A fun place for kids to play, pet farm animals and ride the inflatables and merry-go-round. These rides are all free and just the thing for care-givers to relax and enjoy whilst the little ones 'just do it'. This carnival atmosphere wouldn't be complete without hot dogs and candy floss!

Street Parade

2pm to 3pm, Starts from Courtenay Place and finishes at the Frank Kitts Park.

Communities share their spirit of what Chinese New Year means to them by parading through the main streets of Wellington – a fabulous display of colour and celebration. The Year of the Sheep features lion dancers, dragon troupes twisting through the central city route, plus traditional costumes of past dynasties.
