The ‘flagship’ of Wellington’s Chinese New Year Festival is Festival Day, with a programme that reflects all the traditional aspects of a Chinese New Year celebration, and is showcased as the finale of this Wellington event by the following events:

Asian Market - Food

10.30am to 6.30pm, Shed 6

Ah, the taste-sensations and smells of delicious Asian foods! Come and see what's on offer; foods of Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnamese and Chinese, all waiting for you to enjoy. Community groups and local restaurants and cafes have joined forces to bring all these delicious foods for you to sample, for lunch, a snack or just from intrigue - it's all worth the walk and wait!  The Market wouldn't be complete without an opportunity to meander and purchase from the must-haves of craft, merchandise and information stalls.

Asian Market - Craft & Information

10.30am - 4.30pm, TSB Bank Arena

Discover the new and interesting; crafts, calligraphy and culture.

ANZ, our Platinum Sponsor, is focused on opportunity; come and try your luck on their winning stall and why you're there, talk to the team that can help towards your goals. ANZ takes pride in contributing and supporting the communities through a volunteer programme, and are committed to improving New Zealanders with their level of financial knowledge - drop by their stall to find out more.

We welcome on board our new Platinum Sponsor, Lighthouse at Home, supporting Wellington and Auckland with effective resources and activities for home based child caring. And in a perfect synergy, Lighthouse at Home unfolds a bigger brighter exciting line-up of kid's activities focused in Frank Kitts Park - the Waterfront Carnival. Plus their stall at the Asian Market promises fun activities for preschool and older kids; come and make things, mess up, dress up, have fun!

Confucius Institute is bringing it to the schools; offering a rare opportunity to workshop traditional Chinese dance, check out our Resources tab 'For Schools', and on Festival Day, visit their stall at the Asian Market to see what else they do for the community. Capital E is joining us from their fantastic premises just a few steps from the Asian Market, with kids activities, interactive screens and building paraphernalia. The Wellington Chinese Garden is taking shape, come and see the progress and support the magnificent concept for Wellington's city and community. Stay supple and healthy by visiting our two well-being specialists; chiropractors and acupuncturists. These are just some of the stall selection, don't miss out on all the fun.

Waterfront Carnival

11am - 4pm, Frank Kitts Park

Lighthouse at Home is setting up a fun place for kids to play; come and storm the inflatables and cup 'n saucer ride! These rides are all free allowing fun-fuelled activities for the little ones to 'just do it' whilst care-givers can relax their feet –  and wallet!

Street Parade

2pm to 3pm, Starts from Courtenay Place and finishes at the Frank Kitts Park

Communities share their spirit of what Chinese New Year means to them by parading through the main streets of Wellington – a fabulous display of colour and celebration. The Year of the Monkey Parade features pretend monkeys on wheels, lion dancers, dragon troupes twisting through the central city route, plus traditional costumes of past dynasties.
