Thank you Wellington! You turned out in full force and enjoyed all that was offered during the Festival.

We are so heartened by the support and good will - so there's nothing for it but to return next year!  For the Year of the Ram.

Wellington welcomes Chinese New Year 2014 – The Year of the Horse. Celebrated worldwide on Friday, 31 January 2014, this is the first day of the Chinese New Year calendar.

Considered a major holiday for the many Asian cultures, Chinese New Year, or often referred to as the Spring Festival, is steeped in many traditions. It is a time for family, reunion, good food, and encouraging themes of good luck and fortune, happiness, wealth and longevity.

Asian Events Trust is proud to be the organiser of the Wellington Chinese New Year Festival – and we’ve been doing it for 12 years now, completing a full 12-year animal cycle.

And to Wellingtonians and the wider community, AET thanks you for embracing the Chinese culture and helping to grow this Festival to what it has become today, and the way forward for future generations. So with an abundance of double-happiness we celebrate this 13th anniversary whilst welcoming in the Year of the Horse.

As the cultural events capital of New Zealand, we want Wellington’s Chinese New Year Festival to be a showcase of energy and excitement. We’ll introduce fashion trends and dance styles to the stage; enliven the streets with a fun and tradition in our street parade; and of course embrace local and international culture in our stage show.

Join us and enjoy this free Festival because there’s something for everyone!

Chinatown comes to Trentham - Chinese New Year celebrations off to a galloping start

The Chinese New Year Festival has partnered with the Wellington Racing Club to enter into the spirit of the Year of the Horse.  Collaborating with the Interislander Summer Festival at Trentham on Wellington Anniversary Day, 20 January, the Wellington Cup Carnival's Family Day will be packed with free entertainment especially for the kids and will feature a special Year of the Horse activity. This unlikely, yet fitting partnership for 2014 calls for a sumer of exciting family event, which will appeal to all Wellington audiences.

New Venue for 2014

We're excited to be located in a new venue for 2014; the Michael Fowler Centre (MFC). It's got everything we could possible need to make the Festival a success plus it's located right in the heart of the city!

  • The Asian Market will be located in the Fletcher Challenge Foyer (Grd Floor) and the Renouf Foyer (1st Floor)
  • All Cultural Entertainment will be performed on the main stage of the MFC
  • The MFC Carnival Carpark will host outside activities, like horse & cart rides, bouncy castle and face painting
  • The Street Parade starts as it always has, from Courtenay Place but will finish up at the MFC car park in Wakefield Street
